Our department was founded by Prof. Dr. Erhan Bişkin in 1988 as the first Bioengineering Department of our country within the Institute of Science and Technology. It gave its first master's degree in 1992; In 1994, he was the first graduate to receive a doctorate degree and was also the first person to receive the title of Associate Professor in the field of bioengineering in our country. Prof. Dr. Oktay Beşkardeş was the first head of the Department, then Prof. Dr. Erhan Bişkin, and then Prof. Dr. Tülin Kutsal (2009-2015), Prof. Dr. İbrahim Vargel (2015-2018), Prof. Dr. Erhan Bişkin, respectively. Continued by Dr. Menemşe Gümüşderelioğlu (2018-2021) and Prof. Dr. Halil Murat Aydın (2021-2023). Currently, Prof. Dr. S. Ali Tuncel is the head of the department. In its strong academic staff, a total of 26 professors, 5 associate professors, 2 doctor lecturers and 1 research assistant are currently working from the Faculties of Engineering, Science, Medicine, Pharmacy and Dentistry.

Hacettepe University Bioengineering Department has carried out pioneering research with over 260 master's and doctoral graduates and over 620 high-impact SCI publications to date.
